esterday was World Bipolar Day. This day is celebrated each year on March 30th, the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, who was diagnosed as probably having bipolar disorder. The purpose of this day is to bring awareness to the world about bipolar disorder and eliminate the social stigma surrounding it. We want to be a part of this day so read on to learn more about bipolar disorder.

Learning about Bipolar Disorder:

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes a significant challenge to patients, health care workers, family members and others who are affected by it. Just like some are diagnosed with diabetes and others with heart disease, bipolar disorder is another medical diagnosis.

We all have times when we are excited about our future, set high goals and are ready to move forward. Then there are other times in our lives when we feel unmotivated, sad, and depressed.  For people suffering with bipolar disorder, these normal emotions feel out of their control. Bipolar disorder is a medical condition that involves changes in brain function leading to mood swings. These mood swings can be so severe that they really interfere with ones’ daily functioning.

No one knows for sure what causes bipolar disorder. It is a perfect storm of genetics, environment and biological factors. There is no laboratory test or X-ray that can be used to make a diagnosis. Physicians take a detailed history and make a diagnosis based on this. Bipolar disorder usually begins in early adulthood with the average age of onset 18-24.

Recovery from bipolar disorder means living a meaningful, happy and healthy life – despite the challenges of a mental illness.

Naturopathic treatments are meant to be supportive so those suffering can rely on fewer medications and experience fewer side effects. Here are some naturopathic treatments that are helpful for those suffering with Bipolar Disorder.

  • Omega 3: Omega 3 fatty acids have incredible anti-depressant effects. Click here to learn more.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide): It is not uncommon for those suffering with bipolar disorder to experience anxiety. Niacinamide works as an anti-anxiety supplement and may decrease the need to be on additional medications.
  • B12 (cobalamin): This supplement can help those feel more full of energy and generally more well overall when on medications that have fatigue as a side effect.

Whether you are someone who suffers with bipolar disorder or you know someone in your life suffering please feel welcome to reach out for support. We are here to help.
